New town hall on the Great Ring

The New Town Hall in Wroclaw is an administrative building on the Great Ring . It was built in the middle of the 19th century as an extension of the old town hall .

planning

Former canvas house

In the middle of the 19th century, the city's population increased sharply. The old town hall was therefore no longer able to carry the growing capacities for a larger administration. Thus the idea and also the need to expand the town hall arose. Furthermore, the old town hall was no longer up to date and in need of renovation. The southwest side of the inner block of the Great Ring was chosen as the location. The screen house previously stood at this point . This market facility became superfluous after the repeal of the feudal Magdeburg town charter.

The Prussian master builder Friedrich August Stüler was commissioned with the design for the New Town Hall , according to whose plans an extension (“Stüler building”) of the Wroclaw City Palace had already taken place. In 1858 Stüler submitted a first draft. This was based on Neo-Gothic and Neo-Renaissance architecture and was similar to the canvas house.

implementation

The canvas house was demolished between November 1859 and February 1860. Construction of the New Town Hall began in the same month. In July 1862, the southern part of the building was completed and shortly afterwards it was possible to move into. The northern section was completed in May 1864. This section was rescheduled several times, which postponed completion by months.

History since 1868

Secretariat of the Lord Mayor of Wroclaw

Between 1889 and 1894 the interior of the town hall was redesigned again. The premises were modernized and rebuilt according to plans by Richard Plüddemann . Among other things, the mayor's audience hall was redesigned.

In the 1920s there were plans to demolish the building and replace it with a high-rise. The German architect Max Berg provided drafts and plans for this, but these were never implemented.

The building was renovated in the 1990s . A glass fountain was erected in front of the building in 2000 . In the 21st century, the New Town Hall is the seat of the Lord Mayor of Wroclaw and the City Council of Wroclaw. Browary Restauracje Spiż brewery is located in the basement .

architecture

With its neo-Gothic ornaments, the New Town Hall adapts to the look of the Old Town Hall . Ornaments from the former canvas house were integrated into the facade of the building. A gate passage is incorporated into the western facade, in which the entrances to the city administration are located under a cross vault.
