General

The Neumarktbrücke is a bridge over the Saale at the foot of Merseburg Castle .

history

The first documentary mention of the bridge was made by Barbarossa in connection with the first documentary mention of Neumarkt , today a district of Merseburg, in 1188. Most of the arches of the original bridge are said to have been built from stone right from the start, with only a wooden bridge in the middle section. There were frequent acts of war at the bridge, which was followed by destruction and damage. During the Schmalkaldic War , the bridge was destroyed in 1547 and later rebuilt. The wooden transition was given a roof; from then on it was called the roof bridge .

During the Thirty Years War , Swedish and French troops destroyed the bridge several times. It was burned down in 1636, 1637 and 1641 and several times in 1640. In 1644 the wooden crossing was thrown into the river. But it was always built up quickly. The successor building, built in 1664, was a lift bridge, the side arches of which were made of stone and the middle part of a wooden bridge.

It was burned down by French soldiers during the Seven Years' War in 1757. The wooden bridge was only replaced by a stone arch between 1781 and 1783. The bridge was partially destroyed during the Wars of Liberation in 1813. In 1882 the bridge was widened. A memorial plaque was attached to the bridge in 1891. It was named Waterloo Bridge , but it did not catch on. It was given its present shape through a redesign between 1926 and 1927, where it was widened again.

Plaque

On the west side of the bridge there is a memorial plaque that reminds of a special event. On the bridge, King Friedrich Wilhelm III. in the presence of the Princes Friedrich Wilhelm IV. and Wilhelm I received the news of the Battle of Waterloo and the victory over Napoleon . The news was delivered by Colonel Adolf Eduard von Thile . The memorial plaque was placed on the occasion of the renaming of the bridge in Waterloobrücke in 1891. After the Second World War the memorial plaque disappeared; it was reattached in 1999.
