Nine martyrs from England and Wales
Nine Martyrs of England and Wales , also known as Hugh Faringdon and Companions, is a group of martyrs executed in the Kingdom of England for treason and other offenses . Eight executions took place in 1539 under King Henry VIII . Another execution took place in 1572. They are considered martyrs of the Roman Catholic Church and were on May 13, 1895 by Pope Leo XIII. beatified .

The nine martyrs were chosen from a number of priests and lay people executed during the English Reformation. The names are:

Liturgical Remembrance Day
In England May 4th was set as a liturgical day of remembrance. This was previously the feast day of the eighty-five martyrs of England and Wales . Since the revision of the Liturgical Calendar of England in 2000, the Feast of the Forty Martyrs of England and Wales is also celebrated on this day . These have the rank of saints and theirs was previously commemorated on October 25th.
