Don Piper, ordained pastor since 1985, dies on January 18, 1989 when a huge truck crashes into his car. Piper describes how he was crushed by the roof of his car, the steering wheel impaled his chest and the dashboard broke on his legs. While the rescuers declare Don dead, cover the body with a tarpaulin at the scene of the accident and a pastor prays for him, his soul rises to heaven for 90 minutes. In the afterlife , Don experiences a perfect world full of harmony and love, which he describes as amazing and beautiful, including meeting his family members like his great-grandmother again and joining a heavenly choir. Then Don's soul returns to the body and his life functions start again. In the hospital, the seriously injured person experienced a life full of limitations and physical agony, which was in stark contrast to the unearthly experiences he had in the afterlife. Now Don clings to his faith in God and hopes for an afterlife that seems better to him than being bedridden. Don's wife Eva and their three children help him to process the experiences and to accompany him back to life. Piper told his story in front of 3,000 live viewers. His story has also appeared on numerous television and radio programs.
