The newworldly tiny squirrel ( Sciurillus pusillus ) is a little researched squirrel of tropical South America . It lives in northern Brazil , northeastern Peru , French Guiana, and Guiana .
features
With a head-torso length of ten centimeters and a tail length of twelve centimeters, this is the second smallest squirrel species in the world. Small squirrels have a brown coat color. They inhabit the canopy region of the tropical rainforest . Here they run around quickly looking for fruits, nuts and tree bark. What is striking about this animal is its shrill call, which resembles the chirping of a grasshopper .
Systematics
The systematic classification of the tiny squirrel is uncertain. For a long time it was placed near the New World dwarf squirrels . McKenna and Bell, on the other hand, considered all other tree squirrels to be sister groups of the tiny squirrel in their classification . New cladistic analyzes even give rise to the assumption that the tiny squirrel does not belong to the tree squirrels at all, but rather represents its own branch of the squirrel. Taking this into account, they are run by Carleton and Musser in their own subfamily, Sciurillinae.
Even more recent works such as the Handbook of the Mammals of the World present the tiny squirrel as an independent one within the Sciurillinae.
