Effects of a Nevera storm in a port open to the west in the northern Adriatic

Nevera , also Neverin , is a Croatian name for sometimes extremely heavy storms from the west in the eastern North Adriatic .

A Nevera is a sudden onset of thermal storm - hurricane with wind gusts to hurricane force . It always comes from the direction of the open sea (west) and, unlike the bora, is locally unpredictable.

Duration

The Nevera always only lasts about 15 to 45 minutes, but has an unusually great destructive power on its locally narrowly limited orbit of a few kilometers. At the end of the storm, (heavy) rain usually sets in. Nevera storms occur almost exclusively in summer, with a clear focus on the months of August and September.

sign

Possible signs to be observed are:

  • normal, sunny (cloudless) weather with light wind, but then sudden total calm,
  • low thunder noises in the west with the onset of (very) light gusts,
  • Lightning in the west.

protection

Tips for boaters:

  • Do not moor in ports, jetties and bays open to the west ,
  • Weathering at sea is sometimes safer than a port open to the west,
  • high Nevera risk in the Croatian northern Adriatic between mid-August and mid-September,
  • listen to the weather report several times a day; Nevera cannot be predicted locally; the Croatian weather stations report at least the regional risk,
  • in case of doubt, call at ports of refuge / bays on the east coast.
