NewPipe is a free media player - App , the best known for their YouTube 's function. It is only for Android , on F-Droid , an alternative app store for free software , and GitHub available.

history

NewPipe was first published as version 0.3 on September 4th, 2015 by the developer Christian Schabesberger.

technology

NewPipe does not use the YouTube API, but reads the content of the YouTube website in order to get the URL of the video files and the metadata such as views and likes / dislikes. This is done in order to share less data with Google. The web scraping tool is called NewPipe Extractor and is an independent project. It is also used in the SkyTube app.

In newer versions of the app, the extractor supports both YouTube and SoundCloud, and there are plans to support even more platforms.

Because of the way NewPipe accesses YouTube without displaying advertisements and using the API, it would conflict with Google's terms and conditions for the app to be available in the Google Playstore.

reception

NewPipe is often mentioned in the media for individual features that distinguish it from the official YouTube app. The reporting often focuses on the possibility of playing audio from videos in the background with the display inactive. The app is also often categorized as a YouTube downloader app. The introduction of control mechanisms for the playback speed of the content was also focused as a single feature. For many sites, however, it is also worth mentioning the independence from Google Play services , which are not required for NewPipe, as well as the greater privacy that goes with it.

Trivia

On April 1st , 2018, a blog post appeared on the official NewPipe blog as an April Fool's joke, announcing that the app would soon also be available in the Playstore due to an agreement with Google on secret financial details.
