Franz Brulliot

Franz Josef Augustinus Brulliot (born February 16, 1780 in Düsseldorf , † November 13, 1836 in Munich ) was a German painter , engraver and art historian .

Life

Franz Brulliot was the son of the art professor Joseph Brulliot . He received his training from his father and the director of the Düsseldorf Art Academy, Johann Peter Langer . During this time he started engraving and attended the art academy. Because of his father's call to Munich, he came there in 1805. In 1808 he became assistant to a director Schmid at the Munich Kupferstichkabinett and began cataloging the holdings. On December 11, 1811, he enrolled at the newly opened Academy of Fine Arts in Munich to study drawing.

Brulliot increasingly turned away from practical artistic work and devoted himself to the study of engraving. He dealt with art history and traveled to the larger cities of Germany, Italy , France and the Netherlands . In 1822 he rose to the position of inspector of the Kupferstichkabinett, making him head of the cabinet. During this time he made several important acquisitions for the cabinet. He also published specialist publications.

Brulliot died of cholera in 1836 . The lawyer, singer and actor Karl Johann Brulliot was his son.
