New Lanark Mill No. 1

The New Lanark Mill No. 1 , now the New Lanark Mill Hotel , is a former water mill and now a hotel in the Scottish industrial estate of New Lanark in the Council Area of South Lanarkshire . In 1971 the structure was included in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A. It is also part of the New Lanark World Heritage Site .

history

In the mid-1780s, David Dale had the New Lanark wool mill complex built. The centerpiece was today's mill No. 1, where cotton was processed. The structure of the watermill was based on the 1783 built Masson Mill in Derbyshire, England . Presumably Dale himself supervised the work together with his engineer William Kelly . In 1786 the mill was completed after a year of construction. Operations started in the same year. On October 9, 1788, a fire devastated the mill. The reconstruction took place the following year. In 1945 the upper two floors were reduced, but restored to their original state during restoration in the mid-1990s. The building now serves as a hotel.

description

Mill No. 1 forms the historic centerpiece of the settlement and is therefore in a prominent position south of Robert Owen's House and David Dale's House . To the south, on the banks of the Clyde , the Water Houses extend, while Mill No. 2 is directly adjacent to the east. The mill canal coming from the east runs under the mill and emerges at the water houses.

The five-story quarry stone building with separate natural stone details has a T-shaped floor plan. Its northeast exposed front is 17 axes wide. The two-winged main portal is located on the three-axis-wide component protruding in the middle. The component is designed with Venetian windows and a final thermal bath window in the gable triangle. While 16-part lattice windows were installed on the front , there are 6-part windows on the rear of the building. The mill closes with a slate-covered gable roof with two small skylights on each side of the building.
