The Gillian Lynne Theater (formerly New London Theater) is a theater in London . It's on Drury Lane and Parker Street. The theater has 1106 seats.

history

The first theater on this site opened in 1848 as the Mogul Saloon ; it was also known as the Mogul Music Hall and was renamed Middlesex Music Hall in 1851 . Since that time, the theater was as Old Mo known. In 1891 a new building was erected in its place, which opened as the Middlesex Theater of Varieties . In 1911 it was rebuilt by the well-known theater architect Frank Matcham ; In 1919 the interior was renovated and renamed the Winter Garden Theater . The theater closed in the 1930s, reopened in 1942, but closed permanently in 1959 and demolished in 1965.

Today's New London Theater was designed by Paul Tvrtkovic , Sean Kenny and Michael Percival in 1971–1972 and opened on January 2, 1973 with a production of Peter Ustinov's The Unknown Soldier and His Wife starring the author. It was used as a theater and for conferences. Marlene Dietrich made a guest appearance here as early as 1972. The result was one of the artist's rare concert recordings, which was produced by Bentwood Television Corporation under the title "An Evening with Marlene Dietrich".

From 1981 the New London Theater played the musical Cats for over twenty years , making it the longest-running musical in the history of the West End . In 1991 the composer of the musical, Andrew Lloyd Webber , bought the theater and named it in 2018 after Gillian Lynne , a choreographer and musical director who, among others, also worked with Webber a. a. had worked together for Cats . It is the first theater in London to be named after a woman.
