The New Mexico State Route 264 ( NM 264 for short ) is a state route in the US state of New Mexico that runs in an east-west direction and is the only major road that crosses the Defiance Plateau .
The State Route begins on Arizona State Route 264 on the Arizona border and ends on US Highway 491 . The highway is in the west of the state. From Tse Bonito it is expanded to four lanes.
The road opened as New Mexico State Route 68 in the 1930s . In the 1960s, the number was adapted to AZ 264 for standardization.
