New South Wales Government Railways
The New South Wales Government Railways (NSWGR) were the state railways of New South Wales . They were renamed several times, were also called New South Wales Railways and today: Rail Corporation New South Wales .
history
The New South Wales Government Railways built their entire route network in standard gauge , starting with their first route, the first ever railroad from New South Wales, the Sydney ↔ Parramatta (today: Granville Railway Station) in 1855.
The New South Wales Government Railways were subject to various restructurings during their existence and were initially subject to the Ministry of Public Works of the State of New South Wales (Minister for Public Works), later a separate Ministry of Transport (Minister for Transport). Since 1888 there was a collective management of three railway commissioners, which should largely remove the railways from political influence. In 1907, this collective top management was replaced by a single railway commissioner. From 1932 to 1972 there was a separate railway ministry to which the NSWGR were assigned. On October 20, 1972, the New South Wales Railways were replaced by the New South Wales Public Transport Commission .
Succession
In 1996, 2001 and 2003 there were further railway reforms, which resulted in the Rail Corporation New South Wales , which is responsible for network access for the private railway companies that now offer rail transport.
