The New York State Library is the library of the US state New York in the capital Albany . Like the New York State Museum and the New York State Archives, it is housed in the Cultural Education Center . With a stock of 20 million items, it is one of the largest libraries in the world .

The library was founded in 1818. One of the central tasks was the repositioning of the official publications of the government of the US state New York. Much of the collection is focused on the history and culture of the state. The original seat of the library was the New York State Capitol . Numerous documents, including those of historical importance, were destroyed in a fire in the Capitol in 1911. The library then moved to the New York State Education Department Building .

A sub- facility of the library is the Talking Book and Braille Library (TBBL) for blind and disabled people.
