Newark Castle , originally New-wark of Bargany , is a castle in the Scottish town of Alloway in the Council Area of South Ayrshire . In 1971 the building was included in the Scottish monument lists, initially in monument category B. The upgrade to the highest monument category A took place in 2006.

history

The nucleus of the castle was built in the 16th century as the Tower House . The oldest fragments may date from the 15th century. In a second construction phase during the 17th century, the area of the building almost doubled. In addition, extensions were added in the course of this, but these were torn down in the course of the redesign in the 19th century. This was carried out at the behest of the Marquess of Ailsa after Clan Kennedy acquired the property in the previous century. Another wing was added in the early 20th century. Newark Castle was last redesigned in 1977. In the course of this, the extensions from the 19th century were torn down.
