José G. Herculano de Carvalho

José G. Herculano de Carvalho (born January 19, 1924 in Coimbra ; † January 26, 2001 ibid) was a Portuguese linguist, Romanist and Lusitanist .

life and work

Carvalho studied in Lisbon from 1941 to 1945, was lecturer for Portuguese at the University of Zurich from 1946 to 1949 (with Jakob Jud and Arnald Steiger ) and from 1950 assistant at the University of Coimbra . He received his doctorate there in 1953 with the work Coisas e palavras. Alguns problemas etnográficos e linguísticos relacionados com os primitivos sistemas de debulha na Península ibérica (Coimbra 1953), completed his habilitation in 1958 with the work Fonologia mirandesa (Coimbra 1958) and became a professor in Coimbra.
