description

The elongated building is located on a hill above Glen Avenue where it joins Balfour Street to the west of Port Glasgow. It dates from 1774, making it the oldest church in the city that still exists. The two-story, symmetrical building is kept simple and sober. The masonry consists of cut quarry stone . The entrance area emerges on the north-facing front. The arched windows are arranged on five vertical axes. The construction of a bell tower was planned for a long time, but was never implemented. The interior was redesigned between 1920 and 1922. The organ was installed in the rectangular apse and the altar area relocated and modernized. The executive architect was Mervyn Noad from Glasgow . The former glass and woodwork by Archibald Dawson and Charles Baily have since been removed. A modern brick annex adjoins the south side . After the merger of two parishes, the building became obsolete and has been empty since then. The interior was largely removed.
