The Newbattle Old Bridge is a former road bridge in the Scottish village of Newbattle in the Midlothian Council Area . In 1971 the building was included in the Scottish List of Monuments in the highest category A. In addition, it forms a category A monument ensemble with various buildings from the nearby Newbattle Abbey .

description

The bridge dates from the 16th century, but has obviously been redesigned several times over the centuries. Due to the lack of a year, the year of construction cannot be dated exactly. The sandstone masonry viaduct is located on the eastern edge of Newbattle. It once led a road running in north-south direction over the South Esk. In 1956 the bridge was replaced by a new building a few meters to the west, which leads the B703 towards Dalkeith .

The Newbattle Old Bridge spans the South Esk with two lined pointed arches , which are so strongly pressed that they almost appear as segmental arches . The road is paved and about three meters wide. It extends to the parapets on both sides, which are designed in the middle with alternative bays for pedestrians. While this is triangular on the east side, it emerges semicircularly on the west side. The pillar is provided with brick-lined, pointed icebreakers . Two coat of arms plates on the west side have meanwhile been removed.
