With effect from May 1, 1863, the Newton and Machynlleth Railway was leased to the Oswestry and Newtown Railway for 100 years. The lease guaranteed a dividend of £ 4.50 per one percent of the company's shares.
The Newtown and Machynlleth Railway merged on July 25, 1864 with three other companies to form Cambrian Railways .
