Nguyễn An Ninh (* 1900 , † 1943 ) was a Vietnamese journalist, publicist and political activist against colonial rule in French Indochina . He died in French custody in 1943.
Life
Nguyen An Ninh was born near Saigon. His father was a scholar trained in the traditional sense who had already been involved in the Cần Vương movement against French rule. Nguyen An Ninh enjoyed a Western education and studied law in Paris . After his return from Europe, he founded the newspaper La cloche felée and, as a speaker, was often critical of the colonial authorities. Nguyen An Ninh propagated nonviolent resistance against the colonial rulers analogous to the teachings of Ghandi. When he found a growing following, he was briefly imprisoned in 1926. In the 1930s he cooperated with the Communist Party of Indochina and published in its central organ La Lutte . In 1937 he was imprisoned again. He died in French custody in 1943 on the prison island of Poulo Condore .
