Nick Mortimer (* before 1960 in England ) is a New Zealand geologist who, in addition to his numerous publications, has made a name for himself beyond the professional worldwith his work on Zealandia .

Training and work

Nick Mortimer is a native of England and lives in Dunedin on the South Island of New Zealand . He studied geology and graduated in 1980 with a Bachelor of Science with distinction. He then did a PhD in geology and received his PhD four years later.

Mortimer made his first publications in 1986/1987 while he was working at the Department of Geological Sciences at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver , Canada. He later joined the New Zealand government as a geologist and has been a petrologist at the Dunedin Research Center of the Institute of Geological and Nuclear Sciences ( GNS Science ) in Dunedin since 1994 . He is one of the " Principal Scientists " in the institute . During his career he conducted research in Australia , Antarctica , Canada , the United States , the Pacific seas and many areas of New Zealand.

Mortimer became known worldwide as the main author of the article " Zealandia: Earth's Hidden Continent ", which he published together with ten other scientists in the March issue of GSA Today , a scientific journal of the Geological Society of America , and the publication received a wide response in the media found worldwide.
