Nickel Creek

Nickel Creek is an Americana trio from San Diego with roots in bluegrass , which was assigned to progressive bluegrass in the field of tension between folk music and country music.

The band consists of Chris Thile (mandolin, mandola, vocals, banjo), Sara Watkins (violin, vocals) and her brother Sean Watkins (guitar, piano, backing vocals). The group was formed in 1989, along with Scott Thile, Chris's father, who played the double bass after the Watkins and Thile met at a concert by the band Bluegrass Etc. had met. The oldest of the children, Sean, was just twelve years old at the time. Two albums originate from the early days of the band, both of which are no longer in production.

Alison Krauss later helped them develop their style and produced their album "Nickel Creek", which was released in 2000 on Sugar Hill . Nowadays this record is considered to be the band's major debut. In the meantime Scott has withdrawn from the band. After several years of touring with changing bassists, Mark Schatz filled the position of tour bassist. The group has released three albums and won a 2003 Grammy for "Best Contemporary Folk Album" with This Side . Nickel Creek achieved platinum status for more than 1,000,000 and This Side Gold for more than 500,000 copies sold.

On August 9, 2005, Nickel Creek released their fifth studio album called Why Should Fire Die? . In November 2006 her record company published a best of with songs from the last three CDs and the live versions of "You Don't Have To Move That Mountain" and the "Fox" Medley.

The band decided at the end of 2007 after their tour to suspend their musical project indefinitely. Chris Thile and Sara Watkins dedicated themselves to solo projects, Sean Watkins founded the group Fiction Family together with Jon Foreman , the singer of the band Switchfoot . In early 2014, Nickel Creek announced the band's reunion on their website. In New York the musicians recorded ten new pieces, which were released on April 1, 2014 on the album "A Dotted Line".
