NickStories (abbr. "NiSt") is a story site on the Internet that specializes in giving young ( gay ) authors the opportunity to present their self-written stories to a broad audience. But lesbian and heterosexual authors are also given the opportunity to publish.
development
Nickstories was founded on August 9, 1998 as a private project. Initially there were four regular authors, whose stories were published in their own categories. The page's claim was: "Stories by, for and with gay boys"
Some time later, the story pool was set up in which other users could also publish their stories. The Short Stories area has been set up for shorter stories . Updates were made at irregular intervals. Larger updates traditionally took place at Easter, the “birthday” in August, and Christmas.
At the end of 2003 the concept of regular authors was dissolved. From now on, stories were presented centrally on one page, sorted by author. This was made necessary by the enormous growth in authors. Updates were still infrequent.
In March 2004, the original founder separated from the rest of the NickStories team that had now been formed. At the same time, the editorial team , consisting of 6 people, was created whose task is to read incoming stories, edit them and then publish them promptly. The principle of irregular updates has been abolished. Stories now mostly went online 2–3 weeks after they were submitted. In addition to a design change and the introduction of the community profile, the claim of the site was changed to “More diverse than any rainbow”.
The pool of lecturers was founded at the end of 2007 to support the proofreaders . As there are currently no employees available in this team, the offer has been temporarily suspended.
Since mid-2005 the editorial team has consisted of 12 to 14 permanent members. In May 2013, the editorial team was given dual leadership. By dividing the post between two people, the processing of the stories after going through the editorial department was further accelerated. Stories now usually go online 2 weeks after they have been submitted. They are then corrected, formatted and available in HTML , PDF , EPUB (new since 2011) and as a print version.
The first story competition (Challenge) also started in summer 2005. Since then, these have been repeated several times a year. The challenges are given either words that have to be used, a complete story beginning, or just a number of words that should be available as a minimum. As the challenges are very popular, there is only one more one a year due to the amount of work involved, namely the Christmas challenge.
Currently (as of March 2014) almost 700 stories with around 1900 parts by more than 400 authors are published on Nickstories.de.
In addition to the stories
Community meetings have been held annually in changing German cities since 2001. These meetings were discontinued in 2016 due to decreased interest.
Radio Nickstories was first broadcast in 2002 . Special programs (such as the 2005 Bundestag election ) were dealt with by the moderators at irregular intervals . After an interruption, regular broadcasting began in February 2009 with topics changing every month. The community had the opportunity to participate in the program interactively through calls, chat and e-mail. Radio Nickstories ceased broadcasting in 2012.
On June 19, 2003, the NickStories e. V. founded, who has been taking care of the operation of the site, the coordination of meetings and all tasks related to the site since then. The board currently consists of Dirk Marx, Benjamin Bode and Karsten Ruhland. The annual general meetings take place at the community meetings.
On August 9, 2008 nickstories.de celebrated its tenth anniversary. This took the club Nick Stories e. V. as an occasion to hold a birthday gala . As part of the event, the "Nickie Literature Prize" was awarded for the first time. The gala took place in Cologne.
The second award of the literary prize took place on May 4, 2013 as part of the gala for the fifteenth anniversary of the site. The nominees were announced on December 26, 2012. The winners were determined through a vote among users. The next award should take place in 2018.
