Nicky Farrugia

Nicky Farrugia (* 1960 ) is a Maltese triathlete and open water swimmer.

Farrugia first attracted international attention in 1985 when he became the first person to swim from Sicily to Malta. He covered the 87 km from Ragusa to Gozo in 30 hours and 17 minutes. He was surrounded by a metal cage that was supposed to protect him from sharks. His compatriot Turu Rizzo had already failed on this project over 50 years earlier .

Farrugia made several attempts to swim the English Channel in his career , one of which has so far been successful. In 1989 it took him 12 hours and 40 minutes to travel from France to Great Britain .

He competed several times for Malta in international triathlon competitions, such as the European championships in long distance triathlon or the triathlon championships of the small states of Europe. In 1990, 1992 and 1995 Farrugia was Maltese champion in triathlon , and in 1993 in duathlon . He was also voted Malta's Triathlete of the Year in 1991 and 1995 .

In 2012 he was inducted into the Hall of Fame of the Malta Olympic Committee .
