The Malta Olympic Committee (MOC, Maltese Kumitat Olimpiku Malti ) is the National Olympic Committee in Malta with its seat in Gżira . A total of 28 professional associations for Olympic sports, all of which are summer sports, are members of the MOC.
history
The then governor of Malta , Lord Plumer , was a big fan of the Maltese water polo team and had the idea of having them take part in the 1924 Olympic Games in Paris . His term of office ended shortly afterwards, but a member of his staff made Plumer's plans public, so that one of Malta's most famous water polo players at the time, Meme Busietta , took up this idea with a view to the 1928 Olympic Games in Amsterdam . In 1925 the Amateur Swimming Association of Malta was founded. After this became a member of the FINA , Malta immediately applied to participate in the Olympic Games in 1928, but this was rejected by the organizing Dutch committee because Malta, as a British colony, would not be eligible to participate. After a lengthy legal battle, Malta was finally allowed to participate, but it became necessary to form a committee that represented all of Malta's sports with regard to the Olympic Games.
On June 5, 1928, the National Olympic Committee was founded in Valletta, its first president was Anthony Cassar Torregiani . This happened just in time for the water polo competition at the 1928 Olympic Games, where Malta made its Olympic debut. In 2014 , Malta took part in the Winter Olympics for the first time in Sochi after the French Élise Pellegrin started to compete under the Maltese flag due to the poor sporting prospects, as her father is from Malta. The MOK initiated the Games of the Small States of Europe in the 1980s , which took place for the first time in 1985. Since then, Malta has participated in every event. In 2015 Malta took part in the first European Games in Baku .
