The Íþrótta- og Ólympíusamband Íslands ("Sports and Olympic Association of Iceland"), abbreviated ÍSÍ, was founded on January 28, 1912 as an association of the largest Icelandic sports organizations, after the country had already participated in the 1908 Summer Olympics .

history

After Iceland had participated in the Summer Olympics in 1908 and remained medalless, the Íþróttasamband Íslands was founded on January 28, 1912 as the umbrella organization of the largest Icelandic sports organizations. The Olympic Committee of Iceland was then officially founded on September 29, 1921 as Ólympíusamband Íslands and recognized by the International Olympic Committee at the 34th IOC session in Oslo on January 11, 1935 . The Íþróttasamband Íslands finally merged on November 1, 1997 with the Ólympíusamband Íslands to form today's Íþrótta- og Ólympíusamband Íslands.
