biography

Childhood and youth

Élise Pellegrin grew up in Montrichard in the Loir-et-Cher department until she was three , before moving to Ventron in the Vosges with her parents . There she discovered her love for skiing at the age of eight and joined the Union Sportive Ventron.

At the age of 15 she competed in her first FIS races in Tignes . In August 2008 she took part in the South American Cup for the first time, where she achieved her best result with ninth place in the slalom at Cerro Catedral . As part of the Argentine championships, she also finished sixth in the slalom, which is her best result in an international competition at this level to this day. After an unsuccessful move to La Plagne and several winters at FIS level, in which she always found herself at the bottom of the result lists, she returned to Ventron. With no prospects in the French Ski Association, she changed her nationality in the summer of 2012 and decided to go to the island state in the Mediterranean because of her father's Maltese descent.

Major events and World Cup

In February 2013, Pellegrin was the first Maltese woman to take part in an Alpine World Ski Championships in Schladming . In both the giant slalom and the slalom, she clearly failed to qualify for the second run with a running gap of 16.5 and a good 14 seconds respectively and finished in 67th and 69th place. Via FIS and Citizen races, she qualified for the Olympic Games 2014 in Sochi and was the first and only female athlete to represent Malta at the Winter Games. 25 seconds behind the winner Mikaela Shiffrin , she finished 42nd in the slalom, but did not get past 65th in the giant slalom. She also competed at the 2015 World Championships in Vail and 2017 in St. Moritz , achieving 57th place in the slalom (2015) as the best result. After the 2015 World Cup, she completed a trainer training at the state Center de ressources, d'expertise et de performance sportives (CREPS) in Nancy . In February 2017, she achieved prestige success in the Citizen Slalom at Le Markstein , when she prevailed against 13 competitors and celebrated a home win.

After she said it was difficult to achieve her best performance in competition, Pellegrin worked with a mental trainer from summer 2017 . With a view to the 2018 Olympics , she again took part in the South American Cup and, for the first time, in the Nor-Am Cup . In September 2017 she finished 12th in the giant slalom in Chapelco, her best result in an FIS race to date. On January 27, 2018, she made her World Cup debut in the giant slalom in Lenzerheide . In Pyeongchang Pellegrin was again represented as the only Maltese athlete - and thus automatically the flag bearer - but could not improve in the technical disciplines compared to Sochi. In the slalom she finished 50th after a satisfactory second run, in the giant slalom she did not finish.

For family reasons, Élise Pellegrin remained closely connected to her home town of Montrichard. For the 2018/19 season, the municipality promised her financial support of 3000 euros , as the ski racer guaranteed a certain international attention.
