IJsselstein originally belonged to the parish of Eiteren . In 1310 the Nikolauskirche was consecrated and made a parish church. In 1398 a monastery with eight canons was established here. From 1532 to 1535, Alessandro Pasqualini built the church tower in Renaissance forms, a unique feature in the northern Netherlands. In 1568 the spire burned down after a lightning strike. In 1577 the Protestants took over the church, who removed the old furnishings. In 1911 the church and tower were badly damaged by fire. The tower was given a modern finish between 1921 and 1923.
