Nicolas-Roland Payen (born February 2, 1914 in Athis-Mons , France , † December 15, 2004 ) was a French aviation pioneer and one of the inventors of the delta wing . Payen was primarily interested in tailless or tandem designs.

Payen designed his first airplane back in 1928 . In 1931 he and his friend Robert Sauvage applied for a patent for triangular aircraft wings in the form of the Greek letter Delta . The design of the experimental aircraft Pa 22 was based on an unorthodox tandem wing concept, with the rear wings being designed as strongly swept delta wings. Payen designed around 250 aircraft.

He died at the age of 90.
