Nicole Malachowski (* 1974 in the State of Nevada as Nicole Ellingwood ) is a pilot of the Air Force of the United States with the rank of colonel . She is the first woman to be accepted into the Thunderbirds , an aerobatic team of their armed forces. This enjoys great popularity across the United States . Her 2006 promotion fueled an ongoing debate about further opening up the United States Armed Forces to women.

Malachowski graduated from high school in Las Vegas in 1992 . After completing her Bachelor's degree in Management with French as a minor at the Air Force Academy , she entered the Air Force's active service.

At the 494th Fighter Wing, she later trained prospective pilots on the F-15 Strike Eagle and flew almost 2,000 hours in the F-15 E and in the F-16 .
