Niederburg (Constance)
The Niederburg is an urban quarter with narrow, angled streets and houses from the Middle Ages in the old town of Konstanz on the left bank of the Rhine . The Niederburg is located south of the Seerhein and is framed by the Rheinsteig to the north, the Konzilstrasse to the east, the Paradies district to the west and the Konstanz Minster on the Münsterhügel to the south .
Urban structure
The Niederburg below the bishop's residence facing the Seerhein was inhabited by craftsmen, fishermen and small merchants. Among them were also "servants" who had to pay taxes to the bishop. Canons of the bishop also lived here. Some of the buildings were destroyed during the city fire of 1355. The streets are curved so that enemy fire could be stopped.
Special buildings and alleys
The former church of St. Johann is located at Brückengasse 1. The Zoffingen Dominican convent from the 13th century and the Konstanz hospital winery are also in Brückengasse . The regional court is located to the west and on the periphery in the Rechtsgasse . To the east and on the periphery is the Konstanz City Theater .
The houses from the Middle Ages can be recognized by their house names and dates in the maze of streets . The Rheingasse leads to the former Rhine bridge with the Rheintorturm. The Inselgasse connects with the Dominican Island . The houses in Niederburggasse are from the 15th century. The former cathedral school was in Konradigasse 3.
Trade and change
In the Niederburg, restaurants and wine bars have been preserved in old walls. The Niederburg is also a location for special trades such as upholstery, violin making and a lead glass window workshop. Specialist shops and retailers offer exquisite products.
