The Nederlandsch Zendeling Genootschap ( NZG ; initially with the full name Nederlandsch Zendeling Genootschap ter voortplanting en bevordering van het Christendom, bijzonder onder de heidenen , German: Dutch mission society for the propagation and promotion of Christianity, especially among the pagans ) was one that existed from 1797 to 1951 Mission Society .

history

The Nederlandsch Zendeling Genootschap was founded in 1797 in Rotterdam on the initiative of Jan van der Kemp (1747–1811) . The model was the London Missionary Society (LMS) founded two years earlier ; Jan van der Kemp himself later worked as a missionary for the London Mission Society in South Africa . The NZG was oriented towards Calvinism , on the one hand connected to the Nederlandse Hervormde Kerk and on the other hand shaped by the revival movement (Dutch: Réveil ).

Her main focus was missionary work in Indonesia . She also sent missionaries to China during the Qing Dynasty . An early Bible translator , who was initially sent out by the NZG and who later coordinated his mission closely with it, was Karl Gützlaff . The missionary and ethnographer Albert C. Kruyt on Celebes , author of Het animisme in the Indian archipelago (1906), was also a member.

Publications

Both to advertise the mission and to report on its progress (and its successes), the NZG published the Mededeelingen van wege het Nederlandsche Zendeling-genootschap .
