Niederstrasser Railway

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Niederstrasser-Bahn was a coal railway that opened in 1850 and connected Thomasroith in the brown coal area of Ottnang am Hausruck ( Wolfsegg-Traunthaler Kohlenwerk AG ) with the Niederstrass coal terminal near Attnang. From there, the coal was transported by cart and ship (Traunsee) to the Ebenseer saltworks. The Thomasroith – Niederstrass (Attnang) line was the first railway at what is now the very important Austrian railway junction Attnang-Puchheim .

In the direction of Thomasroith – Niederstrass, the trains on the narrow-gauge route (1106 mm) managed without any source of power due to the continuous gradient (up to 40 per thousand). For the way back, animals (oxen, horses) were first used, but then steam locomotives from 1870 onwards.

In the course of the establishment of the Schärding - Attnang-Puchheim line of the Crown Prince Rudolf-Bahn (1875–1877), the Niederstrasserbahn was abandoned on the one hand and built on on the other. The Thomasroith-Attnang coal transport was henceforth handled by the Holzleithen branch line ( Holzleithen -Thomasroith). This was also removed in 1938, and coal mining in Thomasroith was stopped in 1968.
