history

Area of the port of Niehl II before its construction

The oil port Niehl II was opened in 1958 as a port for chemical liquid goods, after Niehl I had already been completed. The main customers were the Esso refinery and Wacker-Chemie . With the closure of the Esso refinery in 1985, Niehl II lost its top-selling customer. The port company responded to this in the same year by setting up two roll-on / roll-off systems (“RoRo”), which can load car transporters along with the vehicles manufactured by the nearby Ford plants . In 2006 and 2007, the port facilities that are not open to the public were completely renovated.

port

The facility consists of a harbor basin. The water area of the basin is 87,900 m², the land area 59,700 m². Niehl II has two systems for liquid and gaseous hazardous goods. The RoRo car loading facility for vehicles from the Ford works is located on the west bank.

The port tonnage handled is 412,800 t (2011). The port operator is RheinCargo GmbH & Co. KG, the holding company of Häfen und Güterverkehr Köln (HGK), which is responsible for all Cologne ports .

economy

The Cologne-Merkenich thermal power station of today's RheinEnergie was built on the western bank of the port at the same time as the oil port . It was initially fired with heavy fuel oil.

To the west of the port, on the former Esso refinery site, is the industrial park north. The pipeline connection to the Cologne-Niehl II oil port and to the international pipeline system for nitrogen, natural gas, oil and industrial gases such as ethylene and propylene offers ideal production conditions for chemical companies.
