Niels Grunenberg

Niels Grunenberg (born March 30, 1975 in Berlin ) is a German disabled athlete.

Career

Niels Grunenberg was born on March 30, 1975 in Berlin. Despite his severe disability ( paraplegia ), he devoted himself to the PSC Berlin the competitive sports in the discipline breaststroke . His parade route was the 100 m breaststroke.

Soon his performance was so good that he could become a member of the German national team . At the European Championships in 2011, he reached 2nd place and was thus European champion. In 2010 he had already achieved 2nd place in the SB 5 performance group at the World Championships.

Since 2008 he has participated in Paralympic Games . In 2008 he reached the 4th place. The high point of his career was the 2012 Paralympic Games in London , where he won a silver medal in the 100 m chest course .

For this success, he and all German medalists of the Paralympic Summer Games 2012 received the Silver Laurel Leaf on November 1, 2012 .

Niels Grunenberg campaigned privately for the needs of the disabled: together with Tim Zeelen, a member of the Berlin House of Representatives, he successfully launched the initiative to make access to a post office accessible for disabled people. As a result of this initiative, the Post set up an elevator for the disabled and thus enabled barrier-free access to the post.
