The Nieuport 16 was a French biplane - fighter in the First World War , which of engineer Gustave Delage by the company Nieuport was designed.
development
The Nieuport 16 was a further development of the Nieuport 11 and could hardly be distinguished from it externally. She possessed the more powerful 110 hp Le Rhone - rotary engine , a hull reinforced for heavy-duty drive, a headrest for the pilot and wings with a slightly enlarged wingspan what their flight performance while further improved compared to the Nieuport 11, but made even more top-heavy the plane.
The armament of the Ni16 mostly consisted of a Lewis machine gun firing over the propeller circle . With the introduction of synchronized machine guns, Vickers machine guns were also installed later . Le Prieur missiles were also attached to the struts to combat balloons and airships .
commitment
In the spring of 1916, the first aircraft made their way to the front and gradually replaced the Nieuport 10 and 11 used in the escadrilles de chasse of the French air force .
The aircraft was also flown by British Army and Navy aviators , the Belgian and Russian air forces , who had it reproduced under license at the Russian aircraft factory Duks in Moscow .
Overall, only a relatively small number of Ni16s were delivered, as the even more powerful Nieuport 17 came to the front shortly afterwards .
