The Nigg Rock is a 155 m high and island-like cliff in the archipelago of the South Orkney Islands . It is located half a mile northwest of Route Point , the northwest tip of Laurie Island , on the eastern edge of Washington Strait .
The American sealer captain Nathaniel Palmer and his British counterpart George Powell discovered him in December 1821 while they were exploring the South Orkney Islands together. Participants of the Scottish National Antarctic Expedition (1902-1904) mapped it again. The expedition leader William Speirs Bruce named it after the Scottish birthplace of his wife.
