The Nihon Archives Gakkai ( Japanese 日本 ア ー カ イ ブ ズ 学会 , Nihon Ākaibuzu Gakkai , English Japan Society for Archival Science , short: JSAS, German "Japanese Society for Archival Studies") is a scientific society for archival studies , which was established in 2004. It is based in the Minato district in Tokyo Prefecture . The current leader of the company is Minoru Takahashi. Regular membership is possible for individuals, legal persons or organizations can be accepted as sponsoring members.

The main areas of activity of the Society for Archival Studies are research into the management of archives, the establishment, structure and history of archives, and the training of archivists. For this purpose, it uses the findings from other areas of science and cooperates, for example, with the history, social sciences and computer science.

The "Law on Archives" ( 公文 書館 法 , Kōbunshokanhō ) of 1987 stipulates that specialist personnel must be employed for the management, as staff and for research into archive materials. However, a system for training these specialists is still being established. The law on archives was enacted following a specialist conference on historical sciences. This was followed in 1999 by the "Law on National Archives or State Archives" ( 国立 公文書館 法 , Kokuritsu Kōbunshokanhō ) and in 2009 the "Law on the Management of Archives" ( 公 文書 等 の 管理 に 関 す る 法律 , Kōbunsho nado no kanri ni kansuru hōritsu ) . In this context, the Society for Archival Studies had the task of developing a model curriculum for the training of specialist staff at universities. The first degree in archival studies was established in March 2008 at Gakushūin University . The historian Toshihiko Takahashi initially took over the management of the established study area; Currently, Minoru Takahashi, who is also chairman of the society, teaches in the building of the National Research Institute of Japanese Literature .
