Nihon Gennen KK ( Japanese 日本 原 燃 株式会社 Nihon Gennen kabushiki-gaisha , English Japan Nuclear Fuel Limited , short: JNFL) is a Japanese company in the field of nuclear fuel production . JNFL operates in the village of Rokkasho in Aomori prefecture , north of the main island of Honshu , the Rokkasho Reprocessing Plant . Uranium is enriched and spent fuel elements are reprocessed on the site of this facility . After its inauguration, the enrichment plant had a capacity of 150 tons of UTA per year. This capacity was eventually expanded to 1,500 tons of UTA per year. Furthermore, a plant for the production of mixed oxide fuel elements is being built at the local site , which the company expects to be completed in the first half of the financial year 2022. In the mixed oxide fuel elements (MOX) to be produced there, plutonium dioxide from elements that have already been used can be reused. Low-level and vitrified high-level waste is stored in Rokkasho .
history
The company was founded in 1980 as Japan Nuclear Fuel Service Limited (JNFS, English for Nihon Gennen Service ( 日本 原 燃 サ ー ビ ス ) kabushiki-gaisha). In 1984 the Association of Japanese Electricity Companies called for the construction of a reprocessing complex. This was to be built in Rokkasho in Aomori Prefecture and operated by JNFS. A new subsidiary, Japan Nuclear Fuel Industry Limited, was founded specifically for operation. Rokkasho has had its own visitor center since 1991.
