Nihon Yakushi Gakkai

Nihon Yakushi Gakkai ( Japanese 日本 薬 史学 会 , The Japan Society for the History of Pharmacy / JSHP) is a scientific society devoted to the history of pharmacy and thereby seeks to contribute to the further development of pharmaceutical science in Japan.

The society was founded in 1954 by the renowned chemist and lichenologist Asahina Yasuhiko ( 朝 比奈泰 彦 ), professor emeritus at the University of Tokyo .

Since 1966, the Society has published Yakushigaku Zasshi (The Japanese Journal for History of Pharmacy) twice a year with peer- reviewed articles on the history of pharmacy . English summaries have been mandatory since 2015. In 2016 the society published an extensive “Encyclopedia of the History of Pharmacy” ( Yakushigaku Jiten ) with contributions from more than 80 experts.

The JSHP maintains close relationships with the International Society for the History of Pharmacy as well as with Japanese societies in the fields of pharmacy and medicine.
