location

Nikiana is located on the east coast of Lefkada on Drepano Bay ( Όρμος Δρεπάνου Órmos Drepánou ) opposite the Greek mainland, which merges northward into the Lefkada Channel ( Διαύλος Λευκάδας Diávlos Lefkádas ). The city of Lefkada is about 10 km north.

history

The inland villages of Mavrogiannata and Kollyvata were taxable in Ottoman times . Their possessions reached as far as the coast. In Vincenzo Coronelli's map from the end of the 17th century, the place names Colivata and Mavrevata are given in the Alessandro area , which largely corresponds to the layout of the rural community founded in the 19th century and today's local community of Alexandros .

Nikiana was recognized in 1940 as a settlement of the then rural community of Alexandros with 196 inhabitants. Since then, Nikiana has registered a steady increase in the number of inhabitants, while the mountain villages have seen a decrease since the 1970s. The inhabitants of Nikina live mainly from tourism, the place has numerous overnight accommodations. The beaches north of the village were designated as bathing water in the 1990s. The water quality has been checked regularly since 2010 in accordance with the EU Bathing Water Directive and has always been rated as excellent since 2012 .
