Nikolai Georgievich Makarov

Nikolai Georgijewitsch Makarow , Russian Николай Георгиевич Макаров , English transcription Nikolai Makarov, is a Russian mathematician who specializes in harmonic analysis . He is a professor at Caltech .

Makarov comes from the Leningrad school of geometric function theory. He studied at the University of Leningrad with his degree in 1982 and his doctorate (candidate title) in 1986 with Nikolai Kapitonowitsch Nikolski on metric properties of harmonic measures . In the same year, he received the Salem Prize for solving difficult problems related to the behavior of the boundary of the conformal mapping of a district area into a Jordan area using stochastic methods. He was in Leningrad at the Steklov Institute . He has been teaching at Caltech since the 1990s.

Makarov's theorem gives a criterion for the disappearance of harmonic measures.

His PhD students include Fields Medal Prize Winner Stanislav Smirnov and Dapeng Zhan . With him he dealt with stochastic properties of iterated polynomial maps (theory of Julia sets).

In 2020 Makarow received the Rolf Schock Prize for Mathematics.
