Nikolai Kapitonowitsch Nikolski

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Nikolai Kapitonowitsch Nikolski , Russian Николай Капитонович Никольский , English transcription Nikolai Nikolskii (born November 16, 1940 ), is a Russian mathematician who was a professor at the University of Bordeaux . He deals with real and complex analysis and functional analysis .

Nikolsky received his doctorate in 1966 from the Leningrad State University under Viktor Khavin (invariant subspaces of certain compact operators, Russian). In 1973 he completed his habilitation (Russian doctorate). He was at the Steklov Institute in Leningrad and taught at the Leningrad State University. In the 1990s he went to Bordeaux as a professor.

He deals with the theory of operators, harmonic and complex analysis.

He is a fellow of the American Mathematical Society . He was invited speaker at the 1978 International Congress of Mathematicians in Helsinki ( What problems do spectral theory and functional analysis solve for each other? ).

Alexander Volberg is one of his doctoral students .

Nikolski was one of the mathematicians in Leningrad who in 1984 recognized the proof of the Bieberbach conjecture by Louis de Branges as correct.
