Steklow Institute for Mathematics

The Steklow Institute for Mathematics ( Russian Математический институт им. В. А. Стеклова ) is a research institute specializing in mathematics in Moscow and Saint Petersburg .

It was founded in Leningrad on April 28, 1934 and named after the mathematician Vladimir Steklov . In 1940 the institute moved to Moscow, mainly for reasons of space.

As of January 2009, the institute has 13 departments in different areas ( algebra , number theory , theoretical physics ).

The Steklow Institute is one of the world's leading basic mathematical research institutes.
