Nikolay Benardos ( Russian Николай Николаевич Бенардос * July 26 jul. / August 7, 1842 greg. In Bernardosowka , Kherson Gubernia , † September 8 jul. / September 21, 1905 greg. In Fastow ) was a Russian inventor and engineer who, in 1881/1882, together with his sponsor Stanisław Olszewski, invented the first practically applicable arc welding process and presented it to the public.

The welding of metals (usually steel or iron) with a welding arc was carried out here with a carbon electrode . Benardos and Olszewski received patents in important European countries . First in 1885 in France, Belgium, England, Germany; Russia followed in 1886 and Spain on January 5, 1887. This was followed by a non-European - in the important US market - on May 17, 1887, a patent for the same welding process under the name Elektrogefest .

In 1887 he presented the first resistance spot welder to the public.
