Nikolai Sergejewitsch Bachwalow

Nikolai Sergejewitsch Bachwalow ( Russian: Николай Сергеевич Бахвалов , English transcription Nikolai Sergeevich Bakhvalov ; born May 29, 1934 in Moscow ; † August 29, 2005 ibid) was a Russian mathematician who dealt with numerical mathematics.

He was the son of Moscow mathematics professor Sergei Wladimirowitsch Bachwalow and studied from 1950 at the Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics (Mechmat) of Lomonosov University . His teachers included Andrei Kolmogorow and Sergei Lvowitsch Sobolew . He received his doctorate in 1958 under Kolmogorow (on the construction of finite difference equations for the approximate solution of the Laplace equation) and completed his habilitation in 1964 (Russian doctorate). From 1966 he was a professor at Lomonossow University, where he headed the numerical mathematics department since 1981.

He is considered a pioneer of the multi-lattice method (with Radi Petrowitsch Fedorenko , Achi Brandt , Wolfgang Hackbusch ).

In addition, early (1959) he considered problems of numerical analysis under the aspect of information-theoretical complexity.

He also dealt with wave phenomena and mechanics of composite materials, further developing the method of homogenization and the method of fictitious domains. He is the author of widely used Russian textbooks on numerical methods.

He had been a member of the Russian Academy of Sciences since 1991 .
