The Nicholas Church is a Protestant church building in the town Mistlau the city of Kirchberg an der Jagst . The parish Mistlau belongs to the church district Blaufelden . The Nikolauskirche is a choir tower church , in which the tower was not completed, but replaced by a roof turret. The painting of the choir from the 15th century is almost completely preserved.

history

The Nikolauskirche stands on the site of a former Benedictine monastery , which was founded in 1282 by Elisabeth von Lobenhausen , the wife of Gottfried von Hohenlohe . The monastery chapel was enlarged around 1400, and shortly afterwards the first fresco paintings were created in the presbytery, which presumably dates from the 13th century. The Würzburg bishop Johann II von Brunn had the monastery closed in 1413, but it resumed operations around 1427-29, whereupon the chapel was renovated and further frescoed paintings. The frescoes show scenes from the life of St. Nicholas , the Passion of Christ, the four evangelist symbols as well as other saints and various coats of arms. In 1479 the monastery was finally given up due to the poor structural condition of the buildings.

Shortly afterwards, the chapel was extended by a nave and turned into a parish church, the frescoes were whitewashed and the choir room was equipped with a large winged altar. Around 1625 the church received an epitaph from a Hohenlohe bailiff, which he set up there while he was still alive. The nave was demolished in 1791 because it was in disrepair and replaced by a new building. When the altar was to be restored in 1856, the dynasty of the time refused to provide the necessary funds, so the Mistlau Altar was given away in 1868 to the State Collection of Patriotic Antiquities in Stuttgart, now the Württemberg State Museum .

In 1970, the foundations of a previous Romanesque building were excavated under the nave. Between 1969 and 1972 the interior of the church was renovated, with the wall to the former sacristy being broken down. The resulting niche was furnished with the choir stalls and the late Romanesque font of the Gaggstatt church, which was demolished in 1904, and rededicated as a baptismal niche. An exterior renovation took place in 1996-97, in the course of which the roof system as well as the tower decoration , the tower clock and the wooden planks on the tower were renewed and the churchyard wall was renovated.

In the course of renovation work, the whitewashed fresco paintings were discovered in 1895 and exposed again by the Stuttgart painter Wennagel. The paintings were dated to around 1430 and show:
