history

In contrast to the large or outer church , the Nikolauskirche, first mentioned in 1269, was also called the small or inner church . The building in its current form has essentially been presented since its Gothic renovation in 1488.

During the city fire in 1634, the church was badly damaged and rebuilt from 1674 on and consecrated in 1682. The baroque stucco pulpit was created by Heinrich Waibel. Modifications have followed up to the present day, the design is the work of many eras. From 1904 the church was only used as a baptismal and wedding church and after this function was given up in 1970 it was left to the Greek Orthodox parish of Waiblingen for use.

After the Second World War (around 1950), a bell that had been in the church tower until then, the baptismal bell (nominal h 1 ), cast in 1677 by Timotheus Hartz, Heidelberg, was hung on the tower of the neighboring St. Michael's Church.

In 2001 the Orthodox parish bought the church building, which was in need of considerable renovation. The renovation by the architect Georg Mavridis took place in two steps, in the first the facade was renovated. In the second and more complex step, the interior, for which the services had to be relocated to the parish hall. The floor posed a challenge, as Art Nouveau tiles were laid in visible places, while the old floor was still visible where the benches were. A ceiling painting from around 1779 was also uncovered. Since the walls should not be touched for reasons of monument protection, the entire electrical system had to be laid in the floor. A heater was installed. The pulpit was placed back in its original position; Some of the pews were given to communal institutions, where they will serve as waiting pews.
