Michaelskirche (Waiblingen)
The Gothic Protestant Michaelskirche (formerly also called the Great or Outer Church ) in Waiblingen is the largest Protestant church in the city. The name Michaelskirche has been in use since around 1950. The much smaller nunnery is located in the immediate vicinity .
history
The construction of today's church building was probably started around 1440 by Hans von Landau . An exact date of the start of construction cannot be given. The choir was completed around 1449/50. After that there was an interruption due to the war (city war between Count Ulrich V of Württemberg and the Free Imperial City of Esslingen). The tower was built around 1462. In the 1470s and -80s the three-aisled nave was built after another interruption. The dates 1487, 1488 and 149 (0) are given in its vaults. Presumably this year the church was completed by Peter von Lahn .
In 1990, for the 500th anniversary of the church, renovation of the exterior of the nave and the church tower began. This work was completed in 2000.
Previous buildings
In the years 1866, 1910, 1938 and 1978, remnants of a total of three previous churches were found during renovation work going back to the 7th century.
Steeple
The distinctive church tower built around 1462 with a total height of 52 meters is characteristic. While the lower part has a square cross-section, the bell chamber is octagonal.
organ
Today's organ goes back to an instrument by Eberhard Friedrich Walcker , which he built for the 1876 World's Fair in Philadelphia with the hope of being able to sell it in America right away. This hope was not fulfilled, and so he had to bring the organ back to Germany and sell it cheaply. The Waiblingen parish took advantage of this offer, and so the organ was transferred to Waiblingen. In 1971 the company Weigle , Leinfelden-Echterdingen , replaced the interior work, including the historical prospectus (51 stops , three manuals and pedal ). In 2009 the organ was rebuilt by Orgelbau Mühleisen and the disposition was expanded to 55 registers. The neo-Gothic organ case from 1876 with pointed arches, quatrefoils , finials and pinnacles was preserved. In front of the side panels of the swell and the small pedal, a simple side brochure for the new Violon 16 'register was placed. The disposition is as follows:
