Niphont (Galicia)
Niphont ( Russian Нифонт ; † around 1305/07) was the first known Orthodox Metropolitan of Galicia (1302/1303 to around 1305/1307).
Historical mentions
Niphont was mentioned in a listing of Orthodox metropolitans with the Byzantine Emperor Andronikos II from 1302/1303 in 81st place.
He was also mentioned in a letter from the Polish King Casimir III. to Patriarch Philotheos Kokkinos of Constantinople from 1270.
Life
There is no information about origin or year of birth. Niphont was the first metropolitan of Galicia to be mentioned in historical sources.
From the mention it can be assumed that Prince Juri I of Galicia , "King of Russia ", was able to achieve the establishment of a separate metropolitan seat for Galicia with Patriarch Athanasius I of Constantinople. Up until that point there was only the Metropolitan of Kiev for all of Kievan Rus .
The year of Niphont's death is unknown, it may have been around 1305/1307.
