Metropolitan Galicia

The Metropolitan Region of Galicia ( Russian Галицкая митрополия , Ukrainian Галицька митрополія ) was an Orthodox ecclesiastical province in Galicia from 1303 to 1391. It existed during this time with interruptions in addition to the metropolises of Kiev and the Patriarchs of Lithuania .

Ecclesiastical province

The metropolis included the eparchies of Galicia, Peremyschl , Vladimir-Volhynia , Turow, Lutsk and Cholm in 1303 , and since 1345 also Polotsk, Chernigov, Smolensk, Bryansk and Belgorod. In 1371 only Galicia, Cholm, Turow, Peremyschl and Vladimir remained.

Since 988 the Kievan Rus was subordinate to the metropolis of Kiev . In 1240 Kiev and all of western Russia were conquered by the Golden Horde . Since then, Galicia has strived for more independence. In 1253, Prince Daniel Romanowitsch of Galicia had himself crowned "King of Russia" by the Pope . In 1303, Prince Juri of Galicia founded a new metropolis for Galicia and western Russia. The first metropolitan was Nifont, Bishop of Galicia.

In 1321 Galicia, as well as Kiev and western Russia, were conquered by Grand Duke Gediminas for Lithuania. In the period that followed, it was not always known that Galicia was metropolitan. Possibly they changed the designation with the metropolitan of Lithuania .

In 1349 Galicia became part of the Kingdom of Poland . In 1375 Pope Gregory XI. Catholic dioceses in Halitsch , Przemyśl , Vladimir and Chełm . 1375–78 the Metropolitan of Lithuania was responsible for western Russia (appointment of the Bishop of Vladimir-Wolynskyj 1376/77). In 1381 an Orthodox Metropolitan of Galicia was appointed for the last time. Since 1391 Galicia belonged again to the metropolitan Kiev, 1397 an exarch for Galicia and Moldova was installed.
